Divorce isn’t new to me

Always remember, it can't rain all of the time

There are usually a few, life defining moments, that shape who you are and inform your worldview.

I have a few – my mix heritage—is a big one.

The other is that I’m a product of divorce.

At 10, my world shattered. And no, I’m not being dramatic. Let’s start at the beginning. My mother didn’t tell me –her sister did. In a bank lobby.  In Fl. To see what their marital assets looked like and how she could preemptively and proactively protect herself.

When we came back to NYC, we both acted as though everything was normal—she didn’t tell my dad.

Always remember, it can't rain all of the time

I don’t recall if it was a few days, weeks, or months, but, one night, my dad came home with a letter in his hand (had he been served, did he get the mail? I don’t know). He was pissed.

While they yelled behind closed doors (they almost never did that), I watched the Golden Girls.

Want to know what my favorite show is? Doesn’t take a shrink.

A lot of my life since then has been spent learning in opposition to, because of, or shaped by that divorce.
